Establishment of the Slovak State

Slovakia declared independence under the decisive political and military influence of Nazi Germany, resulting in the creation of an authoritarian client state led by Jozef Tiso. From its inception, the Slovak regime adopted racial ideologies aligned with National Socialism, laying the institutional foundations for discriminatory policies against minorities. Roma communities were increasingly framed as socially undesirable and racially inferior, marking the beginning of state-led antigypsyism embedded in legislation and governance.
