Eviction of Roma in Zámoly

Following a storm in October 1997, the local government of Zámoly demolished several Roma families’ adobe houses in a manner later found to be unlawful. The families lived in the local community centre for nearly two years in harsh conditions, while facing constant rejection and threats from the local population. The local government systematically obstructed housing solutions, rejecting offers of support and land from national organizations. As a result of ongoing atrocities, including broken windows, arson attempts, and bomb threats, the group sought asylum in France in 2000. The case became a symbol of anti-Roma sentiment in Hungary and the failure of the legal protection system.
