Father Kun and the Terror on Városmajor Street
One of the bloodiest atrocities occurred on January 12, 1945, at the Chevra Kadisa Hospital on Maros Street in Buda. The militia led by András Kun (Father Kun), who had been expelled from the priesthood, stormed the institution and executed 84 people in the courtyard. Among the victims were almost the entire medical staff and most of the patients being treated there.
Two days later, the unit attacked the Dániel Bíró Hospital on Városmajor Street. Approximately 150 people were killed: immobile patients were shot in their beds or killed by grenades thrown into the wards, while others were executed outside the building. The perpetrators’ goal was the total annihilation of the Jewish population and the seizure of their property, carried out even in the final hours before the arrival of the Red Army.
