summary of incident
On 22 November 2025, on a train at Prague’s main station, Roma children from the Mongaguá football team were subjected to racist verbal attacks and threats. The perpetrators were hooligans supporting the Baník Ostrava team, who were travelling to an away match.
Details of incident
Young Roma footballers from Ostrava and Jihlava were sitting in a train compartment with their coach when drunk Baník Ostrava hooligans walked past, shouting that the place needed to be ‘cleaned up.’ Following the incident, the children were received by President Petr Pavel, and the Baník Ostrava club issued an apology for its supporters. The police eventually shelved the investigation, as they were unable to prove the allegations made by the coach.
Context of incident
The case should be understood within the context of a racist element of the hooligan subculture in the Czech Republic, which is often directed against the Roma minority. This case is particularly serious as the victims of these racist threats and insults were Roma children. It also highlighted the difficulties in identifying the perpetrators and proving their involvement. Consequently, it has caused significant concern within the Roma community.
Responsible actors or groups involved
Several racist hooligans linked to the so-called “Chachaři” entity (supporters of the Baník Ostrava football club).
False narratives or disinformation
The police have postponed the case, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. It’s just that the necessary evidence wasn’t secured.
