Act XXV on Condemning the Persecution of Hungarian Jewry

Act XXV of 1946 formally condemned the wartime persecution of Hungarian Jews and established a legal basis for recognising victims’ rights and prosecuting perpetrators. However, restitution proved largely ineffective. Bureaucratic hurdles, state-claimed assets and weak enforcement meant most survivors could not recover confiscated property, and Jewish-specific losses were diluted by merging their claims with those of other groups, leaving the community without meaningful redress.
