The failure of the House of Fates project

In 2013, the government announced plans to create a new Holocaust-themed exhibition called the House of Fates on the site of the Józsefváros Railway Station. Since there are already several similar museums and exhibitions in Budapest, the purpose of the project remained unclear for a long time. Once the plans were made public, it became clear that the proposed exhibition – much like the Memorial for victims of the German occupation – would seek to minimize Hungary’s role in the Holocaust as much as possible. Soaring costs, the questionable competence of the experts involved, and rivalry among Jewish communities led to a great deal of criticism and conflict, so the House of Fates never opened, and the building was ultimately handed over in 2025 to MTK, a historic sports club with ties to the Jewish community.
