Compensation Law for Holocaust Survivors

In 1997, Hungary passed a law providing a lifetime annuity to Holocaust survivors over the age of 60. The law cited the Treaty of Paris, which stipulated that property seized from the persecuted and left ownerless must be used to support the survivors. After years of debate and previous inadequate measures, the law marked a belated but significant step toward state recognition of the suffering of Hungarian Jews.
