Foundation of MIÉP (Hungarian Justice and Life Party)

On July 15, 1993, István Csurka and members expelled from the MDF founded the Hungarian Justice and Life Party (MIÉP). Positioning itself as a radical nationalist alternative to the post-communist Hungarian mainstream, the party combined xenophobia, anti-Roma sentiment, and strong anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. The party and its politicians regularly stoked fears about Jewish influence in politics, the media, and the economy. MIÉP entered parliament in 1998, but by 2002 it failed to cross the five-percent electoral threshold.
