Hungary joins the European Union
Hungary entered the European Union on 1 May 2004, marking its full integration into Western political and economic structures after decades of communist rule. EU accession strengthened democratic institutions and brought anti-discrimination standards, yet antisemitic narratives persisted in public life, with far-right groups framing EU membership as a threat to “national sovereignty” and exploiting it to fuel xenophobic and antisemitic rhetoric.
