István Csurka’s Political Essay

István Csurka, vice-chairman of the ruling party at the time, the MDF, published a political pamphlet on 20 August 1992, which sparked nationwide outrage. Echoing classic anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, the essay accused “Jewish intellectual circles” of exerting hidden influence during the Kádár era and hindering the rise of the MDF. Due to the fierce backlash, Csurka was ousted from the MDF and shortly thereafter founded his own party, the Hungarian Justice and Life Party (MIÉP).
