The Proclamation of the Third Republic of Hungary

On 23 October 1989, the Republic of Hungary was proclaimed for the third time, thereby officially bringing an end to the socialist era in Hungarian history. Mátyás Szűrös, acting president of the republic, made the announcement from the balcony of the parliament building, referencing the 1956 revolution. This officially paved the way for a multi-party system, market reforms, and Euro-Atlantic integration.
