Proclamation of the Third Hungarian Republic

On 23 October 1989, Hungary declared the Third Republic, formally ending communist rule. Interim President Mátyás Szűrös announced the change from Parliament’s balcony, symbolically echoing the 1956 Revolution. The shift introduced a democratic, multi-party system and set Hungary on a path toward market reforms and eventual Euro-Atlantic integration.
