On 9 September 1981 in Konin a series of clashes broke out between Polish youths and local Roma. A Romani man was reportedly confronted at a cinema, which led to a fight. In the following days, the conflict was said to escalate: residents, angered by circulating rumours, were urged to “deal with” the Roma.
Riots and rumours
The immediate cause of the unrest was a street fight. After refusing to give a light or some other small favour a young man leaving the cinema became involved in a confrontation with a young Romani man. Around twenty people reportedly took part in the brawl, including two Roma. Rumours then spread through the town claiming that Roma had begun attacking local residents. In response, several hundred people engaged in attacks against Roma, allegedly as retaliation for assaults on Poles. Feeling increasing pressure and fearing for their safety, some Roma were said to have considered emigrating.
