Commemoration of the Slovak State Sparks Controversy

A public commemoration linked to the founding of the 1939 Slovak State drew criticism for sidestepping the regime’s role in persecution and deportations. In this period, commemorations often became a proxy for a larger political struggle: whether national identity would be built on selective pride, or on acknowledgement of complicity and the moral lessons of the Holocaust. When commemorative events sanitise or relativise the past, they create fertile ground for extremist nostalgia and encourage “respectable” versions of narratives that far-right actors later mobilise more aggressively.
