Attempt to evict Roma in Székesfehérvár

In October 1997, the local government of Székesfehérvár wanted to relocate Roma families living on Rádió Street to metal containers set up on Takarodó Road, which were later ruled unfit for habitation. The plan was condemned by civil rights activists and the Anti-Ghetto Committee (GEB) as creating segregated housing and a "social ghetto". After lengthy negotiations, an agreement was reached on 25th November. The local government provided HUF 30 million to the families to purchase property elsewhere in the country. However, this solution led to further conflict: in the surrounding villages (e.g., Pátka, Belsőbáránd), local residents tried to prevent the families from moving in by setting up roadblocks and staging protests.
