Speech of Hilary Chełchowski

At the plenum of the Provincial Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party (PZPR) in Wrocław, Hilary Chełchowski, a member of the State Council, delivered a report in which he offered some criticism of the party’s previous policies, although he did not support the thaw or reforms. He pointed out the errors of Stalinism, which was interpreted as an attack on the system and led to his marginalization. In his speech, he stated: “People complain that some Jews in responsible positions do not fulfill their duties. We must not turn a blind eye to these issues when people talk about them.” He added that the Jewish population should be allowed to emigrate to Israel.
