Adoption of the Equal Treatment and Equal Opportunities Act

On 26 March 2003, Hungary passed Act CXXV to strengthen protection against discrimination and promote equal opportunities. Aligning with EU directives, the law prohibited unequal treatment based on characteristics including ethnicity and required state institutions to address exclusion. Despite its significance, enforcement remained inconsistent, limiting its practical impact.
