Adoption of the New ‘Fundamental Law’

Hungary’s 2011 Fundamental Law replaced the communist-era constitution with a nationalistic framework centred on Christianity, sovereignty, and traditional values. Adopted by the Fidesz government without broad consensus, it strengthened executive power, weakened institutional checks, and raised concerns among minorities—Roma and Jewish communities included—about exclusion, reduced protections, and growing political polarisation.
