An explosive device detonated near Roma homes in Prague

Three youths stole fire extinguishers, filled them with an improvised explosive mixture, and detonated them near Roma homes on Šimůnková Street with the explicit aim of intimidating local families. No injuries occurred, but the attack demonstrated growing extremist violence at the end of the socialist era. StB investigators identified antigypsyist hatred as the perpetrators’ primary motivation, a revealing acknowledgement in a system that publicly denied racial tensions.
