Calls to kill Roma after Romani musician’s anti-racist protest

Romani musician Roman Banga became the target of extensive online threats, including calls for violence against Roma, after protesting at the Czech music awards Český slavík in Prague on 26 November 2016. He whistled and left the hall when the band Ortel placed second and its singer Tomáš Ortel third. Banga later explained his protest online, citing the band’s xenophobic lyrics and links to neo-Nazi circles. His action triggered a wave of online hate speech and threats directed at Roma.
