Commencement of construction of a pig farm extending into the area of the former gypsy concentration camp in Lety u Písku

In Lety u Písku, construction began in late 1972, with funds from several local agricultural cooperatives, to build a large-capacity pig farm, the area of which also encroached on the site of a former World War II Romani concentration camp. The construction of the pig farm was completed in 1974. Even then, several Romani people were already striving to build a memorial at this site. Although the construction and operation of the pig farm were not directly motivated by anti-Gypsyism, the insensitivity to the sacred significance of the site had an anti-Roma focus as a result. The pig farm was demolished only after a long-running protest campaign in 2022.
