Establishment of the Cultural Association of Gypsies in Hungary

The association, established under the Ethnic Affairs Department of the Ministry of Culture, was the first Roma advocacy organization in Hungary. Its first secretary general was Mária László, one of the most prominent historical figures of the Hungarian Roma community, who worked tirelessly for the rights of the Roma and for their cultural and social advancement. As secretary general, she launched numerous programs to improve the situation of the Roma. The association operated until 1961.
