On 25 August 2007, Jobbik founded the Hungarian Guard, a far-right paramilitary group whose black uniforms and marches evoked Arrow Cross symbolism. Claiming to “protect the Hungarian countryside,” the Guard held intimidating marches—often in Roma-populated villages—framing “Gypsy crime” as a national threat. Although banned in 2009 for violating constitutional rights, successor groups persisted, and the Guard’s rhetoric helped create the climate that preceded the 2008–2009 anti-Roma serial murders.
