First Roma Employment Restrictions

The Slovak authorities introduced regulations barring Roma from selected professions and forms of employment, effectively excluding them from large segments of the formal economy. These restrictions deepened existing poverty and forced many Roma families into informal or precarious labour. By legally defining Roma as unsuitable for certain types of work, the state reinforced stereotypes of Roma as unproductive and marginal, justifying further exclusionary measures.
