Hungarian Round Table Talks

Hungary’s Round Table Talks brought the ruling MSZMP and emerging opposition groups together to negotiate a peaceful transition from communism to democracy. Running from June to September 1989, they produced agreements on multi-party elections, constitutional reform, civil liberties, and competitive political institutions—laying the foundation for Hungary’s first free elections in 1990.
