The 1989 National Round Table Talks

Hungary’s Round Table Talks brought the ruling MSZMP and emerging opposition groups together to negotiate a peaceful transition from communism to democracy. Running from June to September 1989, they produced agreements on the constitutional framework, the democratic regulation of fundamental rights, and the conditions for free and democratic elections—laying the foundation for Hungary’s first free elections in 1990.
