Hungary’s EU accession on 1 May 2004 marked a major political milestone and brought new funding for Roma inclusion in education, employment, and housing. While EU frameworks pushed the state toward stronger equality commitments, entrenched discrimination, school segregation, limited enforcement and corruption of EU funds meant many Roma saw only modest improvements.
