Introduction of “Black ID Cards”

On 17 June 1955, authorities introduced temporary “black ID cards” for Roma unable to prove stable employment or residence, replacing standard identity documents. Valid for only one year and discontinued in 1961, the system reinforced false stereotypes of Roma as itinerant or rootless despite evidence that most Roma in Hungary were long settled.
