Liberation of the Theresienstadt ghetto

On 8 May, units of the Red Army’s 1st Ukrainian Front entered Theresienstadt, the last ghetto in Europe to be liberated. Soviet and Czech medical teams fought a severe typhus epidemic and established field hospitals. Only then could the repatriation of surviving Jews begin, amid enormous loss and trauma.
