Massacre in Jászkarajenő

On 10 October 1944, Hungarian field gendarmes executed 14 Roma men in Jászkarajenő. As the front approached and panic spread, some locals looted warehouses holding property confiscated from deported Jews. Sergeant Major József Varga detained a group of Roma men on suspicion of participating, while non-Roma looters were left untouched. That afternoon, the prisoners were taken to the village outskirts and shot; three managed to escape. The killings formed part of the broader wave of Roma massacres carried out by gendarmerie units and Arrow Cross forces during the final months of the war.
