Massacre in Lajoskomárom

On 23 January 1945, the Hungarian Field Gendarmerie executed the entire Roma population of Lajoskomárom. Among the 16 victims – members of the Peller and Bajzák families – were women, a pregnant woman, a five-year-old child, and an 11-month-old infant. During this period, the front line passed through the village several times, and the settlement repeatedly changed hands between German-Hungarian and Soviet forces. When German-Hungarian troops regained control, they accused the local Roma population of supporting the Soviets – a charge that later proved to be entirely unfounded. The men were shot in the cemetery, while the women and children were executed on the outskirts of the village with the assistance of locals ordered by the authorities.
