Massacre in Lengyel

As Soviet troops approached the village of Tevel in Tolna County in central Hungary, the local gendarmerie commander ordered his men to execute the Roma inhabitants of the neighbouring village of Lengyel before evacuating the settlement. The attackers arrived at the Roma settlement in the early afternoon: they lined up the residents and opened fire on them, while gendarmes stationed on the hillside waited for those who tried to flee, throwing hand grenades at those who took shelter in the surrounding houses. The massacre claimed 14 lives, including an infant and two small children. The perpetrators were captured and convicted years later.
