New leadership in the Party

After Stalin’s death and Bierut’s passing, Poland experienced political thaw and growing social unrest. Worker protests reflected dissatisfaction with economic hardship and rigid Stalinist policies. Amid this tension, reform-minded members rallied around Władysław Gomułka, whose return as First Secretary of the PZPR on October 21, 1956 was seen as a moderate alternative capable of calming unrest and implementing cautious reforms.
