Germany’s occupation of Hungary on 19 March 1944 brought Roma under direct Nazi control. Racial policing intensified, forced-labour demands expanded, and Roma communities faced escalating surveillance, harassment, and deportation risks. The occupation deepened wartime persecution, exposing Roma to the same machinery of racial terror already unleashed across occupied Europe.
