Police Brutality in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County

Police officers assaulted and mocked a handcuffed Roma man in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, filming the abuse while shouting at him. Ultimately, the court convicted the police officers of hateful violence, which is unusual in Hungary. The case exposed the entrenched and systemic antigypsyism within the police force, and deepened Roma mistrust toward law-enforcement agencies, despite the authorities' claims that they are improving hate-crime procedures.
