Quarantine and Forced Resettlement in Hajdúhadház

Roma residents were quarantined in 1947 over suspected typhus, later proven to be malaria from local mosquitoes. Despite this, authorities displaced 331 Roma in August 1948 for “health reasons,” destroying their homes and relocating them to fallow land without support. Complaints from nearby villagers eventually forced officials to allow their return.
