Roma Folklore Ensembles under State Control

State-supported Roma folklore ensembles were created to project an image of cultural inclusion and harmony. In practice, their repertoires were tightly controlled, depoliticised, and stripped of critical content. Roma culture was reduced to a symbolic display serving state narratives, rather than a means of genuine cultural empowerment or self-expression.
