Segregated graduation ceremony at a school in Tiszavasvári

At the end of the 1996/97 school year, 17 Roma pupils from a primary school in Tiszavasvári were excluded from the official graduation ceremony. Their ceremony was held one day earlier, on 12 June 1997. It later emerged that the students were also segregated in their everyday lives: they were not allowed to use the school gym or cafeteria, often due to pressure from non-Roma parents. The case became a symbol of discrimination in education. The Roma Civil Rights Foundation filed a lawsuit against the institution, which it won in a final ruling.
