Slovak Independence and Exclusionary Nation-Building

Following Slovak independence, political elites promoted a vision of national identity rooted in ethnic homogeneity and cultural conformity. Roma citizens were implicitly excluded from this national project, portrayed as outsiders rather than full members of the polity. This exclusion shaped education, public discourse, and policy priorities, reinforcing Roma marginalisation at a foundational moment of state-building.
