The “Érpatak Model” of Local Governance

In early 2008, Mayor Mihály Zoltán Orosz introduced the “Érpatak model,” a harsh, hierarchical system of local governance built on public shaming, strict control of public life, and rigid moral categorisation. Promoted as a law-and-order approach, it disproportionately targeted Roma residents through punitive public-work schemes, intrusive policing, and child-protection interventions that removed children from families. The model later spread to other municipalities, deepening fear, humiliation, and discrimination against Roma communities.
