Vigilante mob violence against Roma in Jiřice

A group of nomadic Roma were passing by the village of Jiřice in southwestern Moravia in wagons. They were allegedly committing thefts in the fields and engaged in a violent confrontation with members of the local agricultural cooperative. They subsequently mobilized the men in the village and attacked the Roma nomads, beating them and destroying their wagons. The case led to the rise of anti-Gypsyism in the region. It also provoked adverse reactions among the political representation and led to restrictive efforts to solve the so-called "Roma issue".
