Violent Assault on Roma Public Workers in Heves County

On 22 August 2014, a masked group of 8–10 men resembling extremist vigilantes attacked Roma public workers with bats, crowbars, and sticks in a forested area of Heves County. Two victims suffered serious injuries while attackers shouted “Die, you stinking gypsies!” throughout the assault. Only one perpetrator—a local powerlifter identified by voice—was ever charged, receiving a suspended sentence. Police failed to identify the remaining assailants, and later evidence revealed that an officer had encouraged the attack beforehand. The investigation was widely criticised for neglecting the incident’s clear racist motivation, prompting victims to seek justice before the European Court of Human Rights.
