demonstration in Deák Square, Budapest

On 29 August 2023, the far-right Mi Hazánk party held a demonstration outside Budapest’s Venyige Street prison, explicitly framed as a protest against “Gypsy crime.” Around 150–200 participants—including party leaders and the paramilitary Betyársereg—used racist rhetoric, invoked terms such as “final solution,” and demanded harsher punitive measures and even the reinstatement of the death penalty. The event followed a murder case in Békéscsaba that Mi Hazánk weaponised for political gain. Rights groups condemned the demonstration as racist incitement, while Roma organisations held a counter-protest.
